Gathaithi is a beautiful example of why coffees from Nyeri have earned such an extraordinary reputation.
Produced by smallholder farmers surrounding the Gathaithi washing station, this AA lot is built around Kenya's celebrated SL-28 and SL-34 varieties. After harvest, ripe cherry is pulped, fermented overnight, washed and soaked in fresh water before being slowly dried on raised beds.
The cup is intensely juicy and remarkably clean. Black currant and raspberry lead into bright Valencia orange, with ripe red plum and grape adding depth and sweetness. The acidity is vibrant and structured, carrying the fruit through a long, transparent finish with subtle spice and tea-like tannins.
Complex, bright and wonderfully expressive. This is quintessential Nyeri: a coffee with enormous fruit character, clarity and energy.
