Kangunu AB is a deeply sweet and layered coffee, with notes of raw sugar, caramel, and dried fruit. In the cup, that sweetness carries into flavors of panela and pressed sugarcane, alongside orange, tamarind, and soft stone fruit, like peach tea.
The acidity is present but more tea-like than bright, giving structure without sharpness. As it cools, subtle spice notes come forward, with hints of cinnamon, ginger, and a light herbal quality.
Overall, it’s a complex but approachable Kenyan profile, more about depth and sweetness than intensity.
Kangunu Farmers Cooperative Society sits about 140 km northwest of Nairobi, in Murang’a County on the slopes of the Aberdare Mountains. It’s a fertile, coffee-growing pocket, with Kangunu itself perched at 1740 meters above sea level. The soils here are deep, well-drained volcanic loams, rich in organic matter, ideal conditions for producing high-quality coffee.
Like many strong cooperatives in Murang’a, farmers take care in the early stages, hand-sorting cherry before delivery. Under and overripe fruit is removed at this stage, reducing defects and quietly improving cup quality in a meaningful way.
This lot is graded AB, medium-sized beans measuring between 15/64" and 16/64". While larger screen sizes often get the attention, size doesn’t necessarily dictate quality. In the cup, this AB lot holds its own, showing comparable character and quality to the larger-bean lots.
